Essay 4

Readerly, Writerly Me.

Writing is the process of putting words down on paper, developing an expression in print. Writing can come from the heart, the brain and the soul. It is a gift that some people will never be able to obtain. It is taking the thoughts from your head and planting them down on a sheet of paper. To many, the pen is considered mightier than the sword. Written expression enhances your power and ability for self-expression. One can envision the writer’s feelings through their own perception allowing for creative indulgence.
Why do I write? I write because I want to and I have to. When I want to write, it is usually about an interest or something personal. I let my mind go blank and my heart pulsate the ideas through my veins and out my fingertips. Expression is not thought; it’s exuded from the soul. It is then, that I am not trying to please anyone. I know that I can write anything I want, and not worry about being a disappointment or worrying about a grade. It is my way of expressing my feelings in which cannot be said aloud. Maybe the words are hurtful, shy, or maybe I just cannot find the ways to say them in person. What do the words mean? Only I will know the true meaning, therefore it is up to the reader to try and gain an understanding, Thus being the readers responsibility. I’m the one putting them on paper, mashing them together like cake batter. Therefore it is up to the reader to understand my uncooked cake.
I may not be much of a writer, but I do write. Writing is a profession, whereas reading is a skill. The reader must obtain the ability to translate the words expressed by a stranger, and incorporate an understanding. Emotions can be encoded and translated by an individual through writing. To be able to express love, hate and passion at its maximum intensity is by far a gift that no one is truly worthy of. If the reader can be captivated and deeply involved in the writer’s vision, at that point the writer is proven worthy of their gift.
A little advice for future writers, life is short. Appreciate everything and everyone you have in your life. Don’t live in the past, instead live in the present and prepare for the future, for everyday is a new day. Make sure you love and cherish everyone you have in your life; you do not know when they will be gone. “I hate to think of the morning, when I will wake up to find you gone” (Collins)
Advice for my reader…Follow the trail of my words and let them guide you to a euphoric state of mind and lose yourself in my thoughts. Let the strength of my words shake the ground underneath you till it splits and let yourself fall into my world. Release your beliefs and believe in me so my words can be your livelihood.

what is happening to writing???

               What is happening to writing?

When we consider the materiality or immateriality of print books vs. digital books, we reach certain conclusions about how writing is changing in this digital, hypertextual, hypermedia age.  Jay David Bolter and his book Writing Space does an interesting job examining the structural and historical shift occurring in this “late age of print.” Bolter discusses the changes in writing and digital media, its history, and predictions of its future.
There are several aspects of new and existing media that is changing. In addition, writing as a print and as a technology itself is also continuing to change. Jay David Bolter is the author of a book titled Writing Space: Computers, Hypertext, and the Remediation of Print. Being a writer himself, Bolter is extremely caught up in the fact that technology has taken such a drastic turn in society. With his smug attitude, he thinks that there is no future for printed text. Printed text will always find its way in the world. It will always be necessary and convenient in some way. It may not be so religious to have books printed on paper anymore, but printed text will find its own way to be important and of such value. Technology may be blooming to be a sense of life, but no matter who you are, printed text will be a reminder of where we came from and will be valued for all eternity. Like I have said in my online blog, technology is just a simpler and easier way for people to get things done. It shows how lazy a society we have become. Bolter is thinking from a writer’s point of view, so he seems somewhat let down with how far we have come from the printing press, and how printed text was so valued in the past. Where as now technology is overtaking that value printed text once possessed. It will always find its way in society no matter how far technology grows. Bolter is too negative and pessimistic for me. I can understand where he's coming from, I just feel he can go a different way about it.
To some, a picture can be worth a thousand words. Giving a different meaning than words on a blank page. Adding texture, color, shape, and the ability to have an imagination. Images have come a long way throughout history.  Whether they’re digital, in a frame, or on a canvas they provide viewers with a feeling rather than a definition. Although, when reading written text, some develop a sense of imagination to go along with the words. Like a picture drawn in their imagination. Ekphrasis is the graphic, often dramatic description of a visual work of art. In ancient times it referred to a description of any thing, person, or experience. The goal of this literary form is to make the reader envision the object described as if it were a physically present object.  In many cases, however, the object never actually existed, making the description somewhat of a demonstration of both the creative imagination and the skills the writer has.
Technology has given individuals the opportunity to view historical pieces of art on the Internet, if the inability to view it in person gets in the way. In my own personal opinion, I feel it should be viewed in person, but the default option is the next best opportunity.  Most novels don’t come with images. Therefore, Digital media is the next best thing in line. As Bolter states, "Digital media claims to achieve greater immediacy and authenticity by integrating images, verbal text constrains the images on the printed page." (pg.47) In addition, a large variety of novels have been made into films, and still continuing to today. Showing that difference to viewers, between reading and thinking, and viewing, imagining, and believing. Similar to the saying, “Seeing is believing”. “The relationship between popular films and novels is further proof that the visual is now regarded as primary...in the case that novels were made into films" (Bolter pg.56)
Many forms of printed text are now using modes of textual and visual representation. An example is a graph used in USA Today presented in Writing Space. Showing how images have made their way into simple graphs to give deeper meaning to what is being presented. This example is a graph used in the text on page 53, demonstrating men shaving. Instead of a standard bar graph, razors are illustrated as the standardly used bars, giving the reader a deeper understanding. “The shaving man himself also has no function in the graph. His presence transforms the graph into a picture…” (Bolter pg.53) Thus showing how visual images have now added representation into statistical forms.
I am not much of a reader. When I read, I tend to get lost in the words and my mind travels somewhere else. I am a very visual person. I am more capable of remembering something that is visual, rather than something read.
Our true history is in the hands of printed text. If it wasn’t for printed text we would have no proof of our worlds past, where we came from, and what we have accomplished to get where we are today. For example, ancient manuscripts and the bible, both telling us how our world has come to be.  BUT when you think about it, what did we do when words didn’t exist? In ancient times, cavemen used hieroglyphics to illustrate the world around them, whether it be animals, weather and climate changes, or even life and death. Both Printed text and visual texts play a huge role in our worlds communication. We depend and rely on them greatly, whereas without them, there would be hardly any communication. No matter the degree at which technology is progressing, I feel that printed text will always serve just as much of a purpose to us, in one way or another. "Print today is continuing to remake itself in order to maintain its claim to represent reality as effectively as digital and other visual technology" (Bolter pg.47)
I may not be much of a reader but I definitely respect printed text. There are texts that have made it hundreds of years and still exist today. For example, the Declaration of Independence and the Diary of Anne Frank. Both in which are irreplaceable and forever recognizable pieces of the past and present.  The declaration represents the United States and where it stands today. The Diary of Anne Frank reminds us of the struggles we once faced and are currently facing today, through the eyes of an innocent little girl. Both powerful printed texts that survived through war. These printed treasures are teaching us that history can provide a message that is still relevant to today.
No matter the distance in differences between visual and printed text, they do at times come together as one. As Bolter expresses, "Text is by no means absent from digital media"(pg72) To view digital media, it is a fact, that the first process you have to take is type words, followed by reading words to get where you need to go. Regardless of the pictures and graphics that may surround them. Therefore, printed and visual media joins together. When we consider the materiality or immateriality of print books vs. digital books, we certainly can reach conclusions about how writing is changing. Jay David Bolter and his novel Writing Space does an interesting job examining the historical and structural shift occurring in this “late age of print.”

Chapter 6: Refashioned dialogues

Chapter 6: Refashioned dialogues

Observe:
-Reading music=Reading books
-A reader that can read something in their head and not physically interpret it as in reading it aloud, like playing it in music
-Writing and reading are not always sequential, can be but not always.
Newspapers, encyclopedias, papyrus
-Greeks- reading doesn’t always have to be left to right
Electronic writing is not sequential
-Bolter- writing text is better/ oral text is better
Plato vs. Socrates
“…Dissatisfactions with linear argument…”
I really liked the second YouTube video. How what we say can be interpreted in different ways, if we just rearrange what we say and how we say.

Infer:
-Writing and reading are not always sequential, can be but not always.
Newspapers, encyclopedias, papyrus
-Greeks- reading doesn’t always have to be left to right
Electronic writing is not sequential
-A reader that can read something in their head and not physically interpret it as in reading it aloud, like playing it in music
- With written text, readers have the ability to go back and stop reading, to think about what was just read
Socrates was known for his verbal/oral texts, how he spoke in person
Blogs as an example/ own electronic space. Discussing class topics, in class, at home, on our phones anywhere.

Questions:

What do you think about writing and reading being sequential? Do you agree with Bolter’s thoughts?

Is written text better, or is oral text better? To you and to society?

Why do you think Bolter was so against Socrates informal (linear) way of writing?

How you feel spoken words have changed through dialogue, in electronic and written?

Do you think these changes in “refashioned dialogue” are for the better?

The Breakout of the Visual

Our Prezi !!!

http://prezi.com/ghoczegwblcq/the-breakout-of-the-visual/

BLIND SCREEN/WANDERING EYES

Definitely not fun typing without being able to see the screen!!!

Who’s the story teller in your family? Relate a story frequently told. How has that person/story influenced you?

The storyteller of my family is my grandpa. At 90 years old, he has the most insightful and yet inspirational stories I have ever heard. During family gatherings, everyone huddles around him, quiet as a mouse and listens to what he has to say. Listening to that thick and heavy accent recalling the last 90 years of his life and past experiences. His comedic fashion of language cannot be dismissed. He interprets humor into every story, gaining everyone’s interest that much more. My grandpa is one of the most important people in my life. Sharing the same birthday, and blowing out the same candles for 22 years, he is a major part of my life. At the age he is, he has come so far, through thick and thin. Coming all the way from Poland, being a spy for the English army, having a fur business in NYC, to being an amazing father, husband and grandfather. Through all of his accomplishments and triumphs, he still walks this earth telling stories for those to listen. His intelligence is beyond others, and his will to live thus far is astonishing.
He has influenced me and continues to everyday. He gives me the drive to overcome any obstacles that come in my way. Giving me the strength to yearn success like he has. Without him, I wouldn’t be the same. I see so much of him in me that will live on forever.

Chapter 5 = The Electronic Book

2. Chapter 5 = The Electronic Book

Observe: I like the style, how it was structured and organized.
I know understand the papyrus roll and a codex. Where they come from. What they entail. There overall purpose back in the day.
I like the comparison, on how we are now going back to the scroll with computers, how we scroll down the screen rather than turn the page as in a book.
I like the video about opposing eBooks. Taking away the new book smell, the feeling of the plastic, rather than paper and leather.
I like the information given about Encyclopedias. (Britannica)
I think that the idea of digital libraries are convenient for some people that don’t have time to step foot in the door of an actual library, but yet it takes away the point in history where the public can go into an actual historical building enclosed with hand drawn books.

Infer:
We are now going back to the idea of the scroll. As in computers, scrolling down the screen to see more information rather than the standard turning of a page as if in a book, or codex of some sort.
eBooks- can be somewhat authentic, going back to the original.
The eBook is more complete, immediate and authentic. Bolter opposes the idea of the eBook.
YouTube video- Doesn’t like eBooks.
Encyclopedia- Bench mark, summary, public can gain all the information in one book. It is Alphabetized.
Digital libraries, you can find the same book on different shelves or under different subjects.

Questions:
How do you feel about eBooks?

Do you find Encyclopedia’s useful and convenient?

Is an online encyclopedia easier than the formal book version?

Do you think the idea of “digital libraries” take away from the physical aspect of libraries?

Do you think that Bolter needs to get it out of his head, that technology is taking over the aspect of written, handheld books.

Chapter 3 = Hypertext and the Remediation of Print

1. Chapter 3 = Hypertext and the Remediation of Print

Observe:
The layout and the information where there from the chapter. The only thing was structuring it. I feel that the video about hyperlinking was displayed way too early in the presentation.
-video about hyperlinking.
-Could have been a bit more creative about sources/pictures
- I think, computers are more likely to make mistakes.
-“Hypertext makes everything easier” (Nel)
- “Connecting to your previous point” (Nel) – that’s why it’s a path
-Graphics with text (Alex)
- I disagree with the quote about how hypertext illustrates our thoughts and mind. Computers cant express emotion, therefore, it cannot associate with our “minds”
-Hypertext can be controlling. They limit your choices of where you can go further. Providing you with a link, with no choice

Infer:
- Main points, hypertext is easier, it provides “wider spectrum of information” “books are more specific on one topic” Hypertext can offer a different page” (Cassandra)
- “Hypertext makes everything easier” (Nel)
- “Connecting to your previous point” (Nel) – that’s why it’s a path
- Every hypertext page is different, can have different mediums
- Hypertext can be difficult, has negatives and positives
- One point, You have control and a choice, delusion
- Another point, you don’t have a choice, no control

Question:
What made you choose that video?

To you, What makes hypertext better than print?

What made you choose the game “Telephone” as your interpretation of speech?

What made you choose these specific quotes from the chapter?

Where these quotes meant to prove just your point when there
are many points trying to be made in the chapter?

You play a video about hypertext and how fast it is, and how you cant stop, to later saying that it limits your ability to look up, which do you agree with?

For you Nel:
My purple feather is weighing down your horse

Trees

Describing tress can be very simple if you go about it the right way. Robert Hass's poem, "The Problem Describing Trees"  was so confusing. I was not a fan of this poem. It starts out like a normal poem, but when he says "No" more than once, it is like the end of the poem is rejected the beginning. Making it confusing to the reader. Im sure he had his own reasons for doing so, personally....I don't get it.

Bolter Bothers Me!!

Bolter is so caught up in the fact that technology has taken such a drastic turn in society. He thinks that there is no future for printed text. Printed text will always find its way in the world. "Like, You Know"

In both visuals, Taylor Mali presents a perfect presentation about how society has changed it's lingual characteristics. In the textual based video, the words give a different meaning. When reading words the brain processes those words into their exact meanings or what you think they mean. His presentation in person is much more interesting. Body language is a major part in understanding people. It helps us to know how they are feelings without them even saying anything. So in his other visual presentation, in person, his body language helps exaggerate his point to the audience, giving them a sense of how he is feelings about the subject. It is that, in which helps the audience read his expressions, and understand his actual point, instead of just "listening" or "reading" what he is saying. Visual's always give viewers an amazing site into the meanings, rather then a still, uniformed piece of text. I think Taylor Mali, makes great points, and i recommend everyone to view his other videos on youtube.

Reflection - "LIFE"

When it comes to visual performances, a structured presentation usually helps viewers understand what is being presented. In most films, the storyline is usually ordered. When it is not ordered, most can agree that they become confusing for people. When it comes to short films, such as visual arguments with images, I feel it can go both ways. Sometime structure makes the point to obvious, and at other times, unstructured can make it more interesting and somewhat challenging. Everyone loves a challenge. People do not realize how the brain works. When certain areas are not used as frequently as they should, they slow down and become weak. Giving people an opportunity to think and challenge their brains is a good thing. As Gunther Kress states, “Whatever is represented in image has to bow, equally, to the logic of space, and to the simultaneity of elements in special arrangements.” I feel as though that when visuals are too obvious they become boring. I’d rather be surprised. I chose to not structure and organize my argument. I feel there are so many ways to look at the word “Life” that structure would just convince viewers to see it how I do, rather than think for themselves with their own opinion.

Sample U-Part 5

"Visual presentations need to be ordered in a more careful manner than textual presentations. Images need to be shown in a sensible way, with sensible of time between each one to allow the viewer to establish meaning." Visual's do not ALWAYS have to be structured. With visuals you can always get the point across in some way, but in the end it is up to the audience/viewer to understand it and get the overall point. There are some major motion pictures out there that are not in order, and to me that makes them more interesting, and causes the audience to think. They think about what is being presented and what they have to work with to thin about a clear understanding of the presentation. Visuals can go both ways. If you want to get the point across in a simple and easy manner, then structure is what you need. If you want to gain your audiences attention and thinking process, then maybe structure is something you want to ignore. When it comes to textual presentations, order is a must. Not only is it confusing to read a text not in order, but you lose that focus of the reader. Try presenting a visual presentation without structure and order and see if you can get the same point across. You'd be surprised how similar the results will be if you have the right audience.

Video (Chel White): how do I relate?

The heart beating- I like the heart. It symbolizes that the writer is alive. Trying to write with a beating heart. Pumping very fast. Sometimes when I write or do something I like to do I can feel my heart beating through my chest, it makes me feel like I am somewhat real.

The words flashing as the mouth talks- is a distraction. I wanted to read what the words said but the mouth overtook the words, making it as thought speaking takes over the meaning of what your trying to say. Like the words don’t matter as much, and it is about listening.

The knives stabbing the heart- show anger. Makes you feel and think of that pain. Like the heart beating is not important anymore. The pictures describe what he is saying and what he means in a way. Giving you examples, making you see what you are hearing in a different light/image/way. Disturbing, clichéd, aggressive. The heart beating makes you think of life, and the knives coming straight after spiraling towards it shows destruction of that life that was originally there.

Shows how hard writing actually can be for some people. It can drive them crazy if they can’t get what they want. Or cant get the words out on paper. It is a very extreme way to get a point across about the writing process.
Billy Collins is calmer about it.

Poem: Billy Collins

A sentence starts out like a blank stare into the distance,
A sunset overlooking an ocean like the world never ends,
Confused, and unsure what to think,
Deep connections emerge into deep thought,
What feels right and what feels wrong,
A person debating what is life really about,
Is it that blank stare or is it something more?
A change? A desire? Something we feel is necessary.
Is it who we really are, or who we want us to be,
All alone, looking at this incredible view,
Wishing, thinking, feeling, wondering, wanting,
Then a little girl walks passed, playing with the sand like a lost puppy. Finding an interest in something as little as a grain of salt.

Do you think its odd or peculiar that the telephone as cell phone (so names for its design as a purveyor of  “phon” –sound) has been adapted to purvey text as image? Why do you imagine this change has occurred?

I think that technology in this day and age is always looking for bigger and better, or you could say smaller and better. Always trying to make things easier for people. We have become such a lazy society that people feel it is easier to type on a phone and make it short and sweet rather than sit with a phone to their ear speaking out loud taking up time. If you text you have a lot more time to answer then if it was a face to face conversation or on the phone. In my case I like texting better, it’s easier for me, and I actually answer a lot quicker. The only problem is, is that people have problems interpreting what people are saying and how they are saying it, for example if you were having a fight. Although I feel cell phones is an addicting technology, which can be considered dangerous when using it the wrong way at the wrong times.

Billy ? ? ?

    1.     What made this poem special?

    2.     What makes you decide to use metaphors when

you write? Is it intended? Does it serve a purpose?

    3.     What do you think make a poem…a poem?

    4.     What was your overall intention when writing this?

    5.     Do you feel you were successful in getting your point across?

Is there anything you would change, or redo?

    Sample H

Our world has become so technology based that most people don't know how to take care of themselves anymore. Everyone loves new toys and electronics, but the laziness of Americans just keeps increasing. Going from a world where we had to kill to get food, play instruments to make music, and write on rocks to express our feelings, to the one we live in today. It has made us unaware of how good and bad we have it. We don't appreciate anything we have anymore. We don't know what it is like to earn what we have to survive in this world. All we need is a little green paper and we can get what we want without lifting a finger.
Yes, these toys and electronic devices are fun, they make things simpler and easier, but it does not change what we came from. That is what people don't think about. We came from a world different from this, and people take for granted what they have. They always look for bigger and better, and more expensive. Although, more expensive does not make objects last longer.
People in American society need to put the materialistic concept aside and start realizing what they have, and how lucky they are. Way back when, we didn't have the things we have today. Therefore, we should appreciate everything we own and use, but should not let that lazy attitude take over, because one day, it could all be history.

    Sample G

It gives you wings, why? American society represented in an energy drink can be misconstrued. American society is not what it looks like. We are actually a very poor country deep down, and our statistical rates go down every year. We spend more money than we make, which is the cause of downhill struggles throughout the society.
Red bull is extremely bad for you. It should never be promoted as a healthy substitute for a sugar rush to the brain. Its chemical content destroys your insides, while you take every sip.
If the people of American society are searching for a quick and easy way to gain energy throughout their day, they should think about their lifestyle. They should get more sleep, take vitamins and herbal supplements, and watch how they eat. These steps would give any person the energy desired, that they will never get from a product such as Red Bull. Not only, but that energy from the Red Bull evaporates extremely quickly, were you begin to go downhill, and your bodily functions get confused. Certain body parts start working at the wrong times, and not working at the right.

Why we write the way we do...

Most academic paper's are set with a standard. It is what we were taught when we were younger. That specific font, that bland white paper, and that formal heading on the top. I'v honestly always wondered what would happen with one of my grades, if i decided to go out of the box. Maybe with a fun font the express how i feel or what i am talking about in my essay. Maybe a colored paper, that could be vibrant and interesting. And what if there was no heading...just my first name sitting on the top, would it offend my teachers? I always wonder, but i never get the courage to try. Maybe i should...

    What i would do!

If I were to present my argument in a single manner, I would write a book. I would write a book explaining my story and send it out to high schools all around the country. I would also try and make it a requirement for high schools students to read it and try and see from another point of view of a young adult that was once in their shoes. If I build up enough confidence I would most likely make speeches at high schools as well. Telling my story in not just words but by showing emotion. If I wanted to go even further, I could make a short film, or reenactment for them to watch. Really placing them in my shoes, and the shoes of other kids around the world. As I stated in my article, over 4000 teenagers are involved in fatal car accidents, and out of 10 percent of teenagers in the country, they cause 12 percent of fatal car accidents.

    Inkshedding

"Winters isn't sure that Mischel's marshmallow task could be replicated today" Winter's is not sure that this experiment could be replicated today because a child's self control has changed dramatically over the last decade. Our society has changed into an "instant gratification" type of society. The technology of today is substantially catered towards fast fixes. If i see something that i want, i need to get it. it is as if we are addicted and until we get that so called "fix" it will bother us until it is ours.
Today's technology has become consumed with instant gratification. Therefore, i feel this experiment would definitely prove to be an epic failure if replicated today. For example, in earlier times, kids had to wait for food that is simply "warmed up" in the microwave to get their instant gratification of food fulfilled. Instant gratification has become very popular. An example would be the "like" button on facebook. Some people post a status on facebook just so they can get the instant gratification of someone so called "liking" it.
Similar to food being warmed up in the microwave now, parents also stop at fast food restaurants on their way home. It is fast, cheap, and easy. Giving instant gratification to both children and the adults. The parent doesn't have to go home and spend time cooking, and the children get the fast greasy food ready to eat in the car. What they dont think about is how bad it is for ou, health wise. Parents have become so lazy and money conscious that they take the easiest root to giving their children and yet themselves as well, the instant gratification. A gratifiying act, which ends up becoming a habbit and satisfying to both.

    You Can Shine !!

After watching the Pantene Pro V commercial, reactions can differ. One reaction can be considered towards the fact that there is a bait and switch that they use. The creators of the commercial create a sensitivity and sympathetic feeling towards the main girl. Giving viewers somewhat of a connection to her. Being that she is deaf, bullied, alone, and troubled. At the end of the commercial, they switch the connection towards the final point of the commercial, the product.

The annoying part of what the creators do, is the fact that they help the viewer build a connection with the character. Giving them a sense of grief for the young girl, but they also give a sense of relief and happiness when she fulfills her dream. This causes the viewer to feel that no matter what issues that may come their way, they can end up like her and fulfill their dream. In reality, the commercial ends up being somewhat fake. Thus giving viewers the feeling of disappointment. Maybe they can’t fulfill a dream, but no matter what, by using their product they can have hair similar to hers.

Unfortunately, this is the job of commercials. Advertisements are meant to make viewers believe things that aren’t always true. Convincing them that they too can have shiny hair, or whiter teeth, or even something like better health. It all comes down to false advertisement, and convincing consumers that they too can be like the characters in their commercials.
