You Can Shine !!

After watching the Pantene Pro V commercial, reactions can differ. One reaction can be considered towards the fact that there is a bait and switch that they use. The creators of the commercial create a sensitivity and sympathetic feeling towards the main girl. Giving viewers somewhat of a connection to her. Being that she is deaf, bullied, alone, and troubled. At the end of the commercial, they switch the connection towards the final point of the commercial, the product.

The annoying part of what the creators do, is the fact that they help the viewer build a connection with the character. Giving them a sense of grief for the young girl, but they also give a sense of relief and happiness when she fulfills her dream. This causes the viewer to feel that no matter what issues that may come their way, they can end up like her and fulfill their dream. In reality, the commercial ends up being somewhat fake. Thus giving viewers the feeling of disappointment. Maybe they can’t fulfill a dream, but no matter what, by using their product they can have hair similar to hers.

Unfortunately, this is the job of commercials. Advertisements are meant to make viewers believe things that aren’t always true. Convincing them that they too can have shiny hair, or whiter teeth, or even something like better health. It all comes down to false advertisement, and convincing consumers that they too can be like the characters in their commercials.

  1. Good start -- In your second paragraph, you might want to EXPLODE the notion that the narrative is a FAKE. Viewers taken in by the hard-luck tale of the sweet, deaf violinist who feel exploited are annoyed. The effect is something like seeing a fondant cake in a bakery window, waiting on a long line to purchase it, and finally biting it to find that it tastes like old cardboard. SHOW the fakery. Provide some "as if" moment.
